Our technician was stung by a couple of wasps today while treating a large wasp nest in Abbots Leigh – thankfully he’s absolutely fine. It’s a reminder of just how defensive wasps can be when their nest is disturbed, and why removal is best left to the professionals.![]()

If you or a family member are unlucky enough to get stung this summer, here are 10 remedies that can help ease the pain and swelling:![]()

1️⃣ Remove the stinger if present – (Wasps don’t usually leave one, but bees do). Gently scrape it away with a card rather than squeezing it out.![]()

2️⃣ Wash the area with soap and water – Helps prevent infection.![]()
![]()
3️⃣ Apply a cold compress or ice pack – Reduces swelling and numbs pain (wrap ice in a cloth, never put directly on skin).![]()

4️⃣ Elevate the stung limb – Raising it above heart level helps reduce swelling.![]()
![]()
5️⃣ Take an antihistamine – Over-the-counter antihistamines (like cetirizine or loratadine) can calm itching and swelling.![]()

6️⃣ Pain relief – Paracetamol or ibuprofen can ease soreness.![]()

7️⃣ Bicarbonate of soda poultice – Mix bicarbonate with a little water to form a paste and apply for 10 minutes to neutralise the sting.![]()

8️⃣ Plantain tincture or leaf – Crushed plantain leaves (the common weed, not the fruit) have been used traditionally to soothe stings.![]()

9️⃣ Homeopathic option – Some people find Apis Mellifica (a common homeopathic remedy) helpful for stings.![]()

🔟 Keep an eye for allergic reactions – Difficulty breathing, swelling of lips or tongue, or dizziness are medical emergencies. Call 999 immediately.![]()
